Things look a lot better in RC4 version 2... it looks like the text is equidistant above and below from the bottom of non-hanging text, and half-way between the tops of capital letters and lower-case non-rising letters. Whatever... I'm happy with it now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Zach Laine (tzlaine) Date: 2006-03-05 13:25 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=729903 No, Geoff, the design decision is right. Your example is contrived, in that not all fonts have uniform vertical sizing for capital letters. There is no general solution to this afaik, so I picked one that works pretty well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Geoff Topping (geoffthemedio) Date: 2006-03-04 20:37 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=913462 That design decision is wrong. Look at this: http://home.cogeco.ca/~toppingwebspace4/FO/properlyspacedtext.png Notice that the top of the "N" and the bottom of the "N" are the equidistant from the top and ottom respectively of the text vertical space, as indicated by the highlighting blue background, and that the top of the "i" or "h" is a smaller distance from the top of the space than this, and the bottom of the "p" is even smaller. The spacing is based on capital letters being evenly-spaced. If lower case hanging letters are further down than the highest letter is up, that's better than having nonsymmetrically spaced capital letters, which looks very wrong in FO. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Zach Laine (tzlaine) Date: 2006-03-04 17:50 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=729903 Notice the top of the "G" and the bottom of the "g" are equidistant from the to and bottom of the text area in http://home.cogeco.ca/~toppingwebspace4/FO/textposition2.png and that the buttons in http://home.cogeco.ca/~toppingwebspace4/FO/textposition.png don't have any hanging characters. This is the source of the perceived bug. This is not actually a bug, but a design decision made in GG. The alternative has the baseline move up and down in each vertically-centered block of text (e.g. a button) to make sure that there is an equal number of pixels of spacing between the top and the bottom, regardless of the characters used. This looks crappy, IMO, and so I don't want to make this change. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Geoff Topping (geoffthemedio) Date: 2006-03-04 01:37 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=913462 Happens elsewhere as well: http://home.cogeco.ca/~toppingwebspace4/FO/textposition2.png ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=544942&aid=1442972&group_id=75752 |
