#45 Minimizing UI Window Causes Severe Graphical Glitches

I'm running WinXP with FO built from source gotten from
CVS on July 1.

If game UI window is minimized, and other program
windows opened / used, sometimes the graphics in
FreeOrion are garbled / missing when the FreeOrion
window is restored.

The UI still responds, and F10 brings up the menu, and
the appropriate button can be pressed (though it has no
text) to exit. The game returns to the main menu, but
the text is also missing here.

Have not isolated what must be done to cause the
errors. Just minimizing and restoring immediately
after does not seem to cause a problem. Minimizing,
and then switching between other windows (Mozilla
browser windows) and then restoring FO is more likely
to cause the error.

    Wow. No idea. I'll leave this open, but I have been unable
    to reproduce this bug so far. Please post more details as
    you find them.

    I've done a bit more testing.

    The effect seems to be related to opening or closing other
    windows (which create buttons on the taskbar) while the FO
    UI is minimized. The effect gets progressively worse as I
    open and close more windows.

    After opening and closing a text editor, I got this:

    http://home.cogeco.ca/~toppingwebspace4/FOBuggyMore.png

    The planet pictures seemed to have one or two frames out of
    their animations messed up... they would flicker
    occasionally and look like the image.

    I then closed and opened a few more windows while FO was
    minimized. The game ended up looking like the previous
    pictures I posted. I then hit F10 and clicked the
    (textless) button to quit the game. On the title screen, I
    saw this:

    http://home.cogeco.ca/~toppingwebspace4/FOBuggyTitleMore.jpg

    With the text oddly readable.

    This may be a problem with the specific version I got off
    CVS. I'm also getting a crash bug after any battles.
    (Also, the battle report disappears too quickly to read,
    immediately after which the game crashes.) The text window
    has this, after a bunch of normal sitrep report text notes:

    HumanClientApp::HandleMessageImpl :
    Message::PLAYER_ELIMINATED : m_empire_id=0 E
    mpires().Lookup(m_empire_id)=02DAE0C01089091037 ERROR :
    main() caught exception
    (std::exception): boost::too_many_args: format-string
    refered to less arguments
    than were passed
    1089091037 DEBUG : SDLQuit() complete.

    I'd make a new bug report, but I suspect it's me, not the
    code... If this persists, I will though. Feel free to do
    so for me, if you think it's worthwhile.

    ~~~
    As an aside, I tried getting a new version of the source off
    CVS tonight, to see if these errors fix themselves with a
    new copy and compile, but I keep getting this error from WinCVS:
    cvs -z3
    -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/freeorion
    co FreeOrion
    can't create temporary directory /tmp/cvs-serv29658
    Permission denied
    google leads me to believe this is a server problem...
    Very nice bug-report!
    Just to rule out this possibility: can you check your memory
    using www.memtest86.org? You will have to run it for more
    than a few hours, over night, for example.
    What model of graphics card are you using?
    sorry, its www.memtest.org
    And, yes, the CVS error seems to be a server problem, try
    again after a while (the same applies to "got EOF from
    server"-type errors)
    I'm unassigning this bug to myself. Did that make any
    sense? Anyway, I mean that I will not fix it. I have been
    unable to reproduce this, no matter how many minimized
    windows I add or remove from the Windows taskbar.
    I got new files from CVS and recompiled. I haven't had the
    problem since.
    Maybe the new GG helped...?
    I will close the bug in a few days, if the problem doesn't
    occur since then.
    I just noticed that while running fullscreen, alt-tabbing to
    another window, then clicking on the windows taskbar button
    to switch back causes the animated planets to glitch for a
    few seconds, animate normally for most of a rotation, then
    glitch again on the next pass (and so on). This was done
    while the sidepanel was open.
    haven't seen issue in almost a year... I think it's safe to
    close now.
