Firstly, thanks for a excellent project - it has at last got me into Linux - I'm now setting up my own apache server etc (Great fun).
Now to the problem (I have spent hours looking though your support & FAQs, so please don't flame me if I have missed something). I have been been using the 0.68 software for a few months, using CIFS is fine on my LAN but could not get FTP to function fully. This came to a head this weekend when I tried to give access to my brother across the Internet - I could not get user/password to work correctly, so in the end allowed anon access, which I closed down when my brother had finished a file transfer.
Today, after googling the web, I found a review where the same problem was mentioned for version 0.66. The reviewer said that he had to re-install from scratch to get the user/password to work. He put it down to having set up a user before setting a group, and believed that this had corrupted the settings. This set alarm bells ringing as I remembered I had done the same thing.
I saved my settings, reset the server, and then reloaded my settings - no success.
I then reset the server, and started from scratch. This time I ensured to set a group before setting the user and it now works without a hitch.
It may seem obvious to set a group first, but your interface opens the user list first, and it appears if you make an entry at this point by mistake, it then corrupts the settings for good.
Hope you can sort this one out for next release.
Thanks again

Good for you, I have huge problems with the CIFS on my windows network. It makes a lot longer to be able to access to My Computer on each computer, and when I try to access the drives, finally I get permission deny when I try to write on the disk. I couldn't found where the problem is.

I made my group first, because I saw that the user had to be part of a group first, and so I didn't actually make a user until I made my group. Just the way I thought about things ... never tried making a user without a group - doesn't the drop down box get blank ... and that's probably what alerted me to fix the groups first. But yes, if you could end up in this situation, I guess it's something work fixing -- points to the freenas team for help
I got CIFS to work here, although in anonymous only ... setting up users caused hangups which did nothing but stop eveything from going - to the point i couldn't get an error, but i couldn't get access either
