I have been witnessing weird crashes/freezes during the boot when booting with ifconfig/route commands in mint.cnf, too but I couldn't find anyone else with similar issues nor a way to debug it. Ironically, now that I replaced my disk and introduced a slightly different way of starting the network (still from mint.cnf, though), I don't see one single crash anymore.
