In a new Colony, the Fertilizer is automatically used by default and the Workers are automatically assigned at the Food Production. But I noticed the Workers are not automatically assigned at the Water Production however this production is set on by default. I assume this is just a display problem and they will be actually assigned when validating the turn's end... but it can be confusing.
Well I thought it over and now I think the game assigns the Workers to the Auto tasks in a wrong order, that is Food in first position, then Water and finally Fertilizer.
For some Colonies (poor soil available), after the Food assignation, there can be not enough workers to assign to the Water... and when the Fertilizer is used, some Workers are de-assigned from their Food position and it's too late to assign them to the Water position.
Finally, I can found some of my Colonies with at once idle Workers and nobody working at the Water Extraction meanwhile it was set AUTOmatically ON ...
I alighted on something strange and I assume it's an other side of the same bug:
When I continue a saved game, in many Colonies (if not in all the Colonies) the Food production is not sufficient to feed the population however is was sufficient when I Quitted the game.
This can be corrected by clicking twice on the convenient AUTO button for each Colony;
It's corrected automatically after ending the turn.
By the way, is it possible to receive an alert message when the population is starving? I think this event porvokes riots important enough for the Mars governor can NOT ignore it ;)

I hope it's neat...

I'll change the assignment order in the next version and we'll try this again.
Did you fix it in the 0.857 version?

No I could not, it is harder than I thought :(
I'm working on it though
I suggest you compare three things when changing turns:
