I would say, go ahead and make your additions to have "freeglut" support more than three mouse buttons and scroll wheels.  This is the time for them.

If I may also counsel a little patience, we should perhaps avoid having everybody making his changes all at the same time.  Things checked into CVS will be overwritten if we are not careful.  So:  what are the changes people want to make, how long will it take to make them, and how badly do they want to make them?

I want my scroll-wheel.

While I'm at it, I would like to support scroll-wheels properly (in a
way that is portable to MS-WINDOWS and doesn't require me to GUESS where
it has mapped my scroll-wheel, and to use more than real buttons if
they are available from X.)
