I'm a linux user and want a OBD/OBDII interface that gives me the most for my money.

That includes compatibility with linux, open source support and supporting a wide range of vehicles for the  least price.

What is the best hardware to choose?

Amazingly a search on this forum for `hardware` didn't yield an answer to this question.

I am NOT speaking from experiance, so take this with a grain of salt.

I too am looking for a linux / open source solution and am thinking about trying one of the kits available here. If you know how to put the stuff together you can get an adaptor that appears to support all but two of the protocols.

I will try to get back to you on this, because I am having a friend that can put that stuff together look at it and see if ordering the completed part or the kit is more cost effective, but in the cheap you could get it for $30.
