Who we are and what we do TurnKey Linux (SF) is a small but dynamic global FOSS loving company. We provide a library of around 100 headless Debian based server virtual machines (or probably more accurately software appliances). They aim to incorporate the best of FOSS available and make it more easily accessible to a wider audience.
We don't profess to be to provide the be-all-and-end-all server systems; but we do provide versatile products that a Linux newb can use OOTB or a highly experienced and skilled SysAdmin or Dev can use as a great starting point. Our appliances are available in a range of build formats and include some cool custom software too like our smart backup service: TKLBAM.
Shout out
Currently we are working on our v14.0 release. While it is progressing well, we have been working on it about a month now and we still have plenty to do. Ideally we'd like to release it ASAP, so this is a shout out for assistance to try to make it happen a quicker.
What we are looking for
What we need is some help updating our appliance library for the v14.0 release. We are updating to Debian Jessie base; and any upstream (i.e. non Debian packaged) software used is also being updated to the latest stable version.
At this point our main focus is updating the existing appliances, but we are still open to including new appliances too. So if you have a favourite webapp or are involved in developing software that you would like to reach a broader audience then now is the time to act.
Updating (or developing new) appliances involves using our custom open source build tool TKLDev to update (create) the source code of our appliances so that the ISOs build successfully without any user interaction and the included software works as it should.
This is not really programming work, it's more SysAdmin / DevOps type work. Experience with git, bash, python and general headless (commandline only) Linux systems would all make the learning curve easier.
I am happy to provide training and mentoring to anyone interested. Ideally that would happen on our forums so the info adds to the knowledge base. Although if there is enough interest perhaps we could also do a live training session on IRC?
This is essentially volunteer/enthusiast work, but there may be opportunity for some paid work for the right person with the right skill set. However please keep in mind that our budget is limited and we do not have the resources to pay "western" level rates.
