We are currently looking for programmers to join the team, developing the Open LaTeX Studio - an open source, Java based LaTeX editor. We are looking for both experienced programmers and people taking their first steps in programming and Java language.
Open LaTeX Studio is a lightweight LaTeX editor, with LaTeX code syntax highlight, code completion and live preview of the document in edition. It allows generating PDF files from the editor and provides Dropbox support, by allowing to connect the application with the Dropbox account, saving and uploading files to the remote directories and providing version control of the remote files. The application is delivered for the Windows and Linux platforms.
The key technologies used are Java and the NetBeans Platform framework.
In case you are new to software development, we will help you getting through any problems you might encounter and will answer any of your questions. This is a great oppurtunity for you to get your first programming experience with real programmers in the actual project!
Looking for experienced Java Developer / Project coordinator
Since the community around Open LaTeX studio is growing, we are currently looking for an experienced Java developer, who will help coordinate the project. Experience with NetBeans Platform framework is an asset, but not strictly required.
The tasks of the project coordinator will include:
- Code reviews
- Assisting other developers and answering their questions
- Assuring code quality
- Using own experience to help the project grow by testing, submitting issues, updating documentation, etc...
we are glad to hear that. We do not require that you have any professional experience in software development. If you wish to try and improve the project with us, you are welcome to do so. Please see the first post for contributing guidelines and contact us via Google Groups in case of any questions.
Best regards,
Sebastian Brudzinski.

I have a lot of programming experience although none of it is recent. I worked in JAVA for awhile before switching to C++. I don't remember much at the moment, but I'm sure it will come back when I get started.
I'm not yet ready to commit to working on the project. I wanted to explore the tools and the code. I followed the instructions on https://github.com/sebbrudzinski/Open-LaTeX-Studio/wiki/Setting-up-development-environment and after a few false starts, I got everything installed on my computer. However, I got stuck in the "Start the application" section. I cannot get the application to run.

thanks for your post. The "Setting up development environment" is a little outdated. We've recently switched to Maven as our build framework, so the structure of a project changed a little. When you open the project in NetBeans, you should see OpenLaTeXStudio-app in the project tree structure. Right click on that and select Run. If that's still not working, please reach to us (preferably via our mailing list) with the details of your problem.
Best regards,
Sebastian Brudzinski.

Open LaTeX Studio is still looking for fresh blood to keep the project going! :)
We have recently estabilished the contributors section on our website, to give people the possibility to get to know the team better. It is also supposed to be a sign of appreciation and a hall of fame for the contributors that dedicated their time to the project.
Due to the rapidly growing amount of new contributors in the Open LaTeX Studio, we have decided it's about time to enforce some code standards in the project. Therefore, we are currently looking for experienced developer to integrate the checkstyle plugin as ant task in the project. The issue is classified as urgent: https://github.com/sebbrudzinski/Open-LaTeX-Studio/issues/53
If you have any experience with ant or checkstyle, this is a perfect issue to work on for you! Of course, we are also still looking for developers to contribute to the project.
Best regards,
Sebastian Brudzinski.
