    BillSV - 2015-03-31

Any level of experience wanted to begin a project that accepts all applicants to work towards a group project. This project, after the community has been established, will decide on what to build.

The entire focus of this project is purely to help new members of SourceForge gain experience and be able to contribute to other projects. This kind of a project, if successfully implemented, could spawn dozens of new members willing to help out with other projects.

If you are a programmer, designer, artist, etc. who is willing to enrich the SourceForge community, is able to teach and manage a group effort, and has significant experience with working on these kinds of projects, please feel free to ask questions.

    Thank you

    EDIT ON JULY 12TH

Hey guys, I haven't been paying enough attention to this over the past few months, and I assume that the project has ground to a halt. I have been too busy to work on it, but I hope that if any of you are still interested in continuing the project, with me there in spirit, that you can message me. I'll send you to GReaper, the guy who spearheaded the effort, a great partner and an able leader.

    Many thanks, and good luck,

    BillSV

I'm happy to contribute some project management skills to this effort e.g. documentation, project progress reporting, organising meetings etc - if needed.

If you really wanted to use it as a project to help new members (both now and in the future) to know what to expect, gain experience, and contribute to other projects, we could use it as a kind of case study and document each stage: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Closure and Maintainence. Then draw up some rough guides and offer feedback for each stage.

It would be a learning experience for me too but I can see it being very useful for all.

I am interested in learning to code if you have anything for newcomers.

I'm interested, since I'm trying to reboot my programming experience.

I'm proficient with both C and C++, also know some Java and Lua. I'm into 3D programming, and know almost everything from vector/matrix math to octrees. You can take a look at my projects, although almost all of them are incomplete.

I have little to no experience with working in groups, but I'd like to do it in order to gain such experience.

    Hey GReaper,

Thanks for being the first to respond! I had begun to lose hope after a week of no replies. So as stated above, anyone who wants to help can join. If you are able to work with me on creating a project of our choosing and want to possibly help myself/others along the way, message me for more information!

    Thank you

I've messaged you and I'll be waiting for details. It's ok if we have to wait for more volunteers to show up, I don't mind.

    Hi,

Thank you for concidering my request.. Yes, I would like to get involved in Retroshare project. I will be looking forward for further instruction on project work.

OS is Windows XP Professional and time zone is BST (British Summer Time)

    Thank you,
    Lakshmi

Mail delivery was failed. So, messaging here.

I don't know about that, I have little experience with network programming. Oh well, why not, I may learn new things in the process. Let's give Retroshare a try.

Although I'd like to start a new project from scratch, in order to go through all the proper stages of group development...

I'm on Windows 7 x64 and Ubuntu 14.04 x64, and my time zone is EEST(GMT+3).

If you guys have experience on GitHub, maybe one of you can help me start a project. It seems pretty easy to collaborate on there. If you don't have a profile yet, go check it out, it seems pretty great.

    GReaper,

Awesome. I'm on Ubuntu too, and Retroshare is based on Linux, so this should work out well.

And we can definitely start the project first if you want.

    Lakshmi,

If you want to work on retroshare too, that would be fun. If you don't, that's fine. We can just start the project if you would rather do that.

Ok then. Now we just have to decide on a project. Any ideas? I unfortunately have no creativity. :D

  • BillSV

    BillSV - 2015-04-12

Well that might be a slight problem. But I guess we can get around it by assigning roles. And fortunately, I am creative :) I don't know exactly what kind of a project you guys want to work on, but I have some simple ideas.
    1. Game. I've been cooking up some ideas for a few years now, and we can just use one that you like.
    2. Media service. Upload your music to the cloud and play it back from anywhere. Kind of like dropbox but with only media files.
    3. Messaging service. Quick, simple messaging that is secure and painless.

We can think of a few more projects together. On GitHub, I invited you, GReaper, to join ProjectLyte. Lakshmi, I couldn't find you; if you want to create a profile, it would help out a lot.

Along with creating an idea of what to do, we need to create a name (I thought of ProjectLyte, just a random name I picked out), and a way to communicate. I don't fully know how GitHub works, so I don't know if there's a way for us to talk on there.

    GReaper - 2015-04-13

Although a game is complicated as hell, I always wanted to contribute to one. I vote for game.

Btw, on github I'm GReaperEx, so you probably invited someone else.
EDIT: Oh, never mind, you found me! xD

A decent way of communication is through Skype. Not even for voice chatting, simple text messaging is enough( my spoken english are rusty :D )

Alright. I'll message you my Skype info. And we can start out pretty simple. Maybe a 2-D platformer or something along those lines.

    Dave M. - 2015-04-21

Hi - I too am looking to work on a project, though my programming skills have gotten very rusty over the past years as my work focus shifted gears. I now am looking to get back into programming. I worked with HTML, JavaScript, MySQL, PHP and dabbled in some Perl back in the day. I have been a Linux and UNIX (FreeBSD) geek since the 90's when I was still hanging out on BBS's(Jason Scott?) and the now defunct Corel Linux(then Corel Linux became Xandros) Deluxe version gave away a free inflatable tux penguin and t-shirt if you bought the Deluxe version of Corel Linux OS.

    Hi,

I am interested in joining your project. I have experience in Java, JavaScript, C#. I am currently finishing my first year of software engineering course at University and have been working for a cloud computing company for the past 3 years in a developer/support role. I'm interested in starting a project with new people and get to some experience.

I'm still keeping my eyes and ears peeled on this project as I think it could be really good once a few more people are on board and we decide what we're actually going to do :-)
