still strange.  but i've got an idea: you have to do a

cvs up -d[P]

in order to get newly checked in directories updated.  otherwise just
the existing ones get updated.  -P deletes empty directories after
checkout.

since the examples stuff was checked in later, that may be a reason.

b.t.w., on the ANET summit last weekend i met johannes goebel.  he was
quite surprised that foo still exists...  hehe.
