I had checked everything.
MySQL is working - I'm using some more
databases without any problems.
While using fontlinge I'd followed
exactly the documentation. And I created a database user for fontlinge
with "grant all privileges on fontlinge.*", created the database exactly
as it's described in the documentation and the fontlinge outputs.
And
I created the file ~/.fontlinge with the appropriate paths, MySQL
username etc.
Everything ran without an error. Only when trying to
create the previews the described errors occurred.
And
fontlinge_database_assistant --check doesn't give any errors. It's all
ok.
So I guess that there's a problem with the mysql connection or a
sql statement in fontlinge-base --preview or in the DBD::mysql::st perl
module.
I'd also checked the fonts mentioned in the error logs but
they were right in place and installed in the system they look exactly
like they do in the preview.
Only one of these fonts doesn't look like
it's supposed to by its name. But I don't think that this is the problem.

+ You might activate logging in /etc/mysql/my.conf and then tail -f
+ /var/log/mysql/mysql.log in another terminal. Then we can find out if
+ querys hit mysql (if not, the connection is broken) or if they have an
+ invalid syntax.
Don't forget to deactivate logging later, since its
+ painful slow and produces giant logfiles. ;-)

After using the --verbose option I'm not sure anymore if this happens
with every font but I can't say with how many because in the meantime -
thanks to fontlinge *g* - I have about 7500 fonts. But the error
messages fill many screen pages.
These are the last few error
messages:

I'm using fontlinge 2.0.1a - the
latest version in the download section - and MySQL 5.0.22 on Gentoo
Linux 2006.0 with kernel 2.6.17.
Btw, even if my English is not the
best I'm posting in English to bug trackers because it's the usual
language for bug trackers and the most international language. So it's
easier for most people to search the bug tracker before posting
duplicate bugs. ;-)

+ AFAIK this happens if access to the mysql database does not work at
+ all.
The database is not needed to generate the previews, so this
+ works. Everything else doesn't.
1. Have you created & configured the
+ database at all?
2. Are you sure it works?
Before working with
+ fontlinge, try to check the connection:
fontlinge_database_assistant
+ --check
That hopefully shows the problem.
Bye,

According to this page bitmap fonts are not supported by ImageMagick:
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/formats.php
According to this thread
they seem to be supported by ImageMagick:
http://redux.imagemagick.org/discussion-server/viewtopic.php?t=3D6651&highl=
ight=3Dpcf
I don't know much about fonts and ImageMagick so I can't give you
more details. But I think that bitmap fonts (.pcf.gz) must be documented
somewhere because they are the standard fonts in Linux (X11). As I
remember they were - at least beside PostScript fonts - the first fonts
supported from the beginning of Linux or X11. TrueType is quite well and
quite userfriendly supported by Linux and X11 only since about 3 or 4
years.
Maybe it's worth a feature request to ImageMagick.

+ I doubt they will ever support it. Bitmap fonts aren't in use often
+ nowadays, and since ttf/otf can include bitmaps for small sizes it's a
+ full replacement for pixelfonts...
I tried with imagemagick it did
+ not get a usefull output. You may try yourself, here's some code for
+ playing:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
use warnings;
use strict;
use
+ Image::Magick;
my $font;
+ $font=3D'/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSerif.ttf';
+ #$font=3D'/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/courO24.pcf.gz';
+ #$font=3D'./courO24.pcf';
my $bild=09=3D Image::Magick->new;
+ $bild->Set(size=3D>'170x170');
$bild->ReadImage('NULL:black');
+ $bild->Draw(fill=3D>'white', stroke=3D>'white', primitive=3D>'rectangle',
+ points=3D>'0,0 170,170');
+ $bild->Annotate(text=3D>'Magick',geometry=3D>'+0+20',font=3D>$font,
+ fill=3D>'black',antialias=3D>'True',gravity=3D>'North',pointsize=3D>34);

Don't forget to deactivate logging later, since its
+ painful slow and produces giant logfiles. ;-)

The problem with different font format is: They are possibly not
supported by the tools we use, mainly ImageMagick/PerlMagick.
1. Do
you know if perlmagick supports that formats?
2. Where are this formats
documented?
If you can't see that fonts in the webinterface and in
the preview images, there's not much use in it.
We did such thing for
mutliple Master fonts, since as a professional format it was my personal
interest to sort them (even invisible), but I would not repeat that
false decision.
However, it it was easy pcf might be integrated. But I
doubt it's easy.

+ According to this page bitmap fonts are not supported by ImageMagick:
+ http://www.imagemagick.org/script/formats.php
According to this thread
+ they seem to be supported by ImageMagick:
+ http://redux.imagemagick.org/discussion-server/viewtopic.php?t=3D6651&hig=
hlight=3Dpcf
+
I don't know much about fonts and ImageMagick so I can't give you
+ more details. But I think that bitmap fonts (.pcf.gz) must be documented
+ somewhere because they are the standard fonts in Linux (X11). As I
+ remember they were - at least beside PostScript fonts - the first fonts
+ supported from the beginning of Linux or X11. TrueType is quite well and
+ quite userfriendly supported by Linux and X11 only since about 3 or 4
+ years.
Maybe it's worth a feature request to ImageMagick.

AFAIK this happens if access to the mysql database does not work at all.
The database is not needed to generate the previews, so this works.
Everything else doesn't.
1. Have you created & configured the
database at all?
2. Are you sure it works?
Before working with
fontlinge, try to check the connection:
fontlinge_database_assistant
--check
That hopefully shows the problem.
Bye,
J=C3=B6rg
----- Posted by he...@ba... at 23:41 on 25-07-2006 -----
+ I had checked everything.
MySQL is working - I'm using some more
+ databases without any problems.
While using fontlinge I'd followed
+ exactly the documentation. And I created a database user for fontlinge
+ with "grant all privileges on fontlinge.*", created the database exactly
+ as it's described in the documentation and the fontlinge outputs.
And
+ I created the file ~/.fontlinge with the appropriate paths, MySQL
+ username etc.
Everything ran without an error. Only when trying to
+ create the previews the described errors occurred.
And
+ fontlinge_database_assistant --check doesn't give any errors. It's all
+ ok.
So I guess that there's a problem with the mysql connection or a
+ sql statement in fontlinge-base --preview or in the DBD::mysql::st perl
+ module.
I'd also checked the fonts mentioned in the error logs but
+ they were right in place and installed in the system they look exactly
+ like they do in the preview.
Only one of these fonts doesn't look like
+ it's supposed to by its name. But I don't think that this is the problem.

I've just installed fontlinge and like it very much.
But beside the
fonts which are supported by fontlinge I have also many - I don't know
how many but more than 100 - bitmap fonts (.pcf.gz) on Linux.
It
would be great if they would also be managed by fontlinge.

Sorry, just noted the "every font". But please still use --verbose to
verify this really happens with every font and not "only" with most of
them.

+ After using the --verbose option I'm not sure anymore if this happens

+ thanks to fontlinge *g* - I have about 7500 fonts. But the error

I'm using fontlinge 2.0.1a - the
+ latest version in the download section - and MySQL 5.0.22 on Gentoo
+ Linux 2006.0 with kernel 2.6.17.
Btw, even if my English is not the
+ best I'm posting in English to bug trackers because it's the usual
+ language for bug trackers and the most international language. So it's
+ easier for most people to search the bug tracker before posting
+ duplicate bugs. ;-)

Hmm, I have never seen this yet. Google says
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/gone-away.html
Does this page
list any reason that could cause your problem?
Can you reproduce this
with a special font? (Use the "--verbose" option to check and run
multiple times.)
What version of MySQL do you use? Which Linux
distribution? Which fontlinge version?
(Note to myself: add more
detailed lists to the bugtracker fields ;-)
BTW: You can also
subscribe to fontlinge-devel mailinglist and discuss it there - in
german or english.

fontlinge_base --previews <path-to-fontbase> gives MySQL errors
for every font:
DBD::mysql::st execute failed: MySQL server has gone
away at /usr/local/bin/fontlinge_base line 688.
DBD::mysql::st
fetchrow_hashref failed: fetch() without execute() at
/usr/local/bin/fontlinge_base line 689.
The previews are generated
anyway.
And I of course ran fontlinge_base --dbinsert
<path-to-fontbase> after every change in the fontbase.
