On my home computer using WinXP Home (and if I'm not
completely wrong, also on my work laptop using XP Pro)
I have experienced that the Folder Size column
dissapears.

I really love this feature, and I notice it quite quick if it
disappears. I normally set a default view (detailed view
with File name, Folder Size and Date) for all my folders.

I have no way to reproduce this - anyone else who has
experienced the same thing?

I had a similar problem after upgrading to version 2.1 of
folder size (can't remember which version I had before),
none of the folders showed the folder size column and I was
unable to view any of the columns from folder size.

I have just uninstalled 2.1 and installed 2.2 and I can now
select and view all the columns.

Folder size has just stopped working again, I suspect it may
have been a consequence of me trying to install a seperate
piece of software (the update software for my sony phone).

Foldersize was working quite happily for a while then I
installed the update software for my phone, rebooted the pc
    and foldersize no longer works.

I have tried uninstalling both pieces of software and then
    reinstalling foldersize without any luck.

Is there anything else I can try?
Is there any more information that I could provide to help
    diagnose the problem?

Disappears forever? Is it replaced by anything? Does it
reappear for some folders? More detail is needed.
I'm guessing this is a manifestation of this Windows bug.
Explorer sometimes has issues with remembering folder
settings. You may be able to find some help here
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=BagMRU&btnG=Google+Search

Some of the followup comments may be the result of
installation issues. Such as trying to upgrade it, while the
old DLL stays loaded in Explorer. Try rebooting :)

Same problem (XP SP2 Pro). The column doesn't just go away,
it's not even available on the columns list. I wouldn't be
surprised if Windows Updates are overwriting something.

Workaround - Do a repair installation:
    1) Add / Remove Programs
    2) Find FolderSize and select "Change"
    3) Select "Repair" for installation type

Just a quick note to confirm that this workaround also works
    for me, thanks jongalloway.

Weird. Sounds like a windows update is removing my column. I
keep my machine updated but I haven't seen this problem.
I just entered a description string in the registry for my
column, which all the other columns seem to have. Not sure
if this will make any difference, but it can't hurt. Does
someone want to try this out?

I'm glad the Repair functionality works though!

So 2.3 is now released, and it registers the column a bit
differently, which might stop Windows Updates from
    unregistering the column.

As I understand this problem, the Folder Size column is not
available for display when right-clicking the column
headers, even when other XP extra columns are available,
such as Owner, Author, Title, Comments, etc. Repairing
Folder Size from Add/Remove Programs cures this condition.

Please let me know if this problem still exists. Otherwise I
will close this bug in a little while.

    Thanks.

I am using 2.3 and the Add / remove programs trick is only a
temporary fix for me, as soon as I restart windows the
    columns disappear again ie
    1) Close all windows explorer windows
    2) Use add / remove programs to repair the install
    3) Open windows explorer, right click on a column header
and I can select folder size etc
    4) Restart pc
    5) Open windows explorer, right click on a column header
and only the standard column headers are visible (date
    created, date modified etc)

Is it possible for you to either do a debug build that helps
track what is happening or provide some information on how
foldersize is installed eg what registry keys, files etc it
modifies so that I can do a comparision to see what is being
    changed.

Can you also explain where you entered the descriptions for
the columns into the registry so that I can attempt this.

I just installed 2.4 and loved it - until I rebooted my computer.

Then the symptoms below appeared for me. No 'folder size' column, and no way to add it back in.

Best I can tell, the service is running, but no folder size column.

Add/Remove, then reinstall puts it back - but only until the next reboot.

    (as of 2/16/2008)

If anyone wants to debug these issues, please do so and let know if you find a solution. The column is implemented in the normal way, fully documented by Microsoft.
Here are general instructions including how to register it in the registry:
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms997572.aspx
And here is the documentation for the interface implemented by FolderSizeColumn.dll
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb776147.aspx
    Good luck!

Followup: (first apology for double messages)

REPAIR does NOT work for me. I have to remove and then reinstall.

Basically, it works GREAT - I LOVE it. But when I reboot, I have to remove it (repair does not work) and reinstall it.

    This is strange.

brio337 - just saw your message.

I'll try what you say - I like this enough to try to debug.

Any help you can provide, thatnks.

biro337 - do YOU put in folder children/file children etc? They also disappear, which may be a clue if you don't do them.
