FoF handled Livejournal protected entries?  I somehow missed this.
Evan mentioned FoF 0.1.9 supports digest authentication.  How would
a user take advantage of this support to read protected LJ entries?

Yes, I did, by adding LJ cookie values to the request in magpie's
_fetch_remote_file function.  I didn't look into digest
authentication.
