Whatever we do, I would like to reiterate the desire to maintain
backwards compatability for the first release, which means we can't get
rid of 'read' yet.

Ultimately, I think I like the idea of using tags for all status, and we
might have some "reserved" tags (read, unread, etc) that don't show up
as normal tags in the UI, but act just like tags.
