I'm currently an undergrad in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University, leaning mainly towards Digital Logic Design and Microprocessors thus far - I've done a little bit of work for GE Medical Systems as an intern doing prototype testing and register setting automation (lets get the intern to do it! 5 days later, I return with a 4mb 1000+ page Excel spreadsheet >_<), but I'm only a little more than halfway through school. I've dabbled in a good half dozen programming languages and thought that getting into modifying FoF would be a good way to help teach myself PHP, although I haven't done much actual modification thus far (I only really tweaked my interface a little bit, haven't done much of anything with the 'guts' of it yet.). I loved the simple interface and design and was keenly interested in following what can be done so change and improve it.

Evan B

Andrew Turner wrote:

Well, I'll start off: I'm Andy. By education I'm an Aerospace Engineer - but spend most of my actual 'dayjob' programming high-end, realtime simulators (simcreator.com). By night I develop Mac applications (DashSaver, SpyTrack), websites (detroitcurlingclub.com) & web applications. I'm very interested in location and geospatialization - which was my original pull into FoF as I modified it to read the GPS locations of web feeds and put them on a map. Anyways, enough about me - I'm am about 50% through the mods, and can get them done this weekend. Can you wait that long? As for db changes, I would think each release would have handle modifying the tables from the previous version - with some kind of upstepping along versions when people skip versions. Perhaps during big changes the install scripts would even create backup tables and then allow the user to remove these backups when everything looks ok. I'll think more on this - it's a very good point. Andy, do you have any estimate on when your changes will land? I already created a branch and did some work, but haven't checked anything in yet; I was going to do more work and check it in tonight, but if you're about to commit, I could wait to avoid the backwards merge. One thing we need to come up with a solution for is how to handle changes that require database changes. We need ways of knowing which features require which database changes, so we know whether or not any given database change needs to be included in an updater. This, by the way, is one of the biggest problems I've never been able to solve really well in past lives. --Benjy On Mon, Nov 14, 2005 at 02:30:23PM -0500, Andrew Turner wrote:

Welcome one and all to the fofredux developer's mailing list. We're just getting ramped up on development - but wanted to setup a list for very dev type things. To date we've figured that we can use this mailing list for dev speak, and a forum for general public help. I have mostly finished the beta releast of FoFRedux which is the last version of FoF with some basic features added in: categories, editing, flagging. And I know the vast hoardes currently on this list (ok, 4 of us) have other ideas already percolating/ready to roll. We can discuss each change whether it is strictly rolled into the main branch/release, a CVS branch for cool new stuff that will probably be broken for awhile, or as a patch b/c it isn't a main feature but something users may want to add on their own.
