Backslashed characters can't be distinguished by BACKSLASHEDP because the backslash is removed while parsing. Characters entered within vertical bars can be distiguished.
I suspect that, at some point, the earlier statement was true and that the documentation was not updated when the code was changed.
This change was mostly copied from the UCBLogo 6.2 manual, including its location within the chapter.
