Thanks for responding. Yes, I know that member variables are accessed by accessor and mutator  functions in java, I just didn't realize that FreeMarker was 'smart' enough to do so.

In Java you usually don't access fields directly outside that class that
contains the fields, but through methods. Accessing properties looks
similar as accessing fields in FreeMarker (and in some other languages),
but in fact properties are accessed via setter/getter methods.
