I'm using an nvidia RIVA TNT2 board with 8MB of RAM to get my problem and
am in 24 bit mode.
I just installed fluxbox-0.1.14 on my other computer with a RIVA 128
board with 4MB of RAM and running XFree86 4.2.1 in 24 bit mode.
It has no problems whatsoever.
Which accelerations do I have to turn off?

Sorry about the delay in responding. Here's a link to the definitions
that go in the XF86config file.
In the Screen Section , near the bottom, I think it was the options for
accelerating line drawing were the ones that did the trick for me. Look at
the options near the bottom and just try a few out. Remember to kill X
(Alt-Ctrl-Bksp) and restart it each time you edit this file.
I found I only had to turn a couple of things off to get the problem to go
away, and overall my system didn't seem to slow down too much.
Over time I just decided to run in 16-bit mode and don't have any trouble.
