I've now reinstalled host-57-44 with KUbuntu. The only problem I had so far is the KDE package manager crashes fairly often. But it's just as easy to use apt-get anyway. I've reinstalled mpir, mpfr, par/gp and am in the process of reinstalling gcc-4.3.1 and magma. It's definitely 64 bits now. If I gave you a password a few days ago, it should be the same one now. If not, I am about to email one to you. Peter Shrimpton noted that to use gcc-4.3.1 you additionally need to put mpfr in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. It is currently installed in /usr/lib, i.e. you need to do export PATH=/usr/local/gcc-4.3.1/bin:$PATH export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/mpir-0.9.0/:/usr/lib/:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH in order to use the new gcc.
