A while back, I suggested chunking the metar stations into tiles (say, 1deg x 1deg). That would make searching for nearby stations in each direction a lot faster: start with your current chunk, then check the eight contiguous chunks, and only if all are empty (i.e. you're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean) expand outwards a bit.
