What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start FG with dc3 or a4f and any airport.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Aircraft placed at > 32000 ft, 0kts IAS

What FlightGear version (or GIT date)?
GIT, 7 August 2011

What operating system and graphics card?
Ubuntu 1.0.04

Suspect this is closely related to Mathias' BVH tree change to retrieve scenery altitude. Might be an initialization order issue.

Probably related: fly-by view is now a "looking from above view"...

    Fix works here.
Bu there seems to be another issue, at least here... big freeze when returning closer to the ground (either from the sea or from higher altitudes), as if it's rebuilding the cache.

    linux, 3.0.0, nvidia 8600gt (280.13), osg 2.9.10.

Ok, as you already tell this is a different problem.
Please do not squash different problems into one ticket.
I have opened a new one regarding the hangs, see:

I will mark this one as fixed.
