Well, I think I spoke too soon.  I changed 'my' account to be a regular
user and FTP still failed.

Out of curosity, I loaded winscp and tried to upload files using my
non-root account and noticed that even my home folder was off limits to
me.  Does that mean i have to use ftp or the web interface for uploading
files?
