See if it's the mt "erase" process is running forever with ps or top.
Or just try "mt -f <device> erase". If that just sits there forever (some
DAT drives I think - no experience here), then set $erase_rewind_only =
'true' in the config file and try it that way.
If it's NOT mt erase causing your problems, set $indexes to false, try
again, and report back with a log if you are still stuck...
