You could craft an exclude regular expression to hit only certain files. I am having trouble restoring a single file. I am probably not entering the command correclty. I need to restore "display board.plt". My windows directory path looks like this-"\\server\fileshare\Designs\Companies\Goodwill Industries\display board.plt" The instrusctions on the SME Server V5 selective restore from tape page says - Note, your ibays are actually under the directory tree location: /home/e-smith/files/ibays/ibayname/files/ so to restore your files you must enter the entire path. For instance in the examples below the ibay name is main and we are restoring to the subdirectory data. In Windows explorer this would be viewed as //server/main/data. To restore a single file, enter as an example: /home/e-smith/files/ibays/main/files/data/filename.doc can someone help me decipher this!! Hello, I have just joined this list and did read some of the archives, but didn't think my Q's were addressed. I have inherited a DLT4700 and want to know if flexbackup supports tape changers? I'd like to set up flexbackup to use a different slot per day for backups. Is there a way to make flexbackup eject the current tape, then load the next tape and begin the backup. Second, does flexbackup support spanning of tapes? I think the answer to this is no, not currently, but may be being worked on. Thanks for your help, JB |

There is no command for mt that allows you to set blocksize, least none that I've found. This was on a Sun E5500, running Solaris 9, and the Sun DLT7000. You can specify it with ufsdump, though, although higher than 126 with a cartridge (or any tape I believe) isn't recommended. (?) Sorry, been up for 24 hours now, as ufsdump was being used incorrectly in a backup script, and the only fs written to tape was /!! So I have been in panic mode. I finally have ufsdump working now, and I'm more accustomed to Linux, which is what I wish the server was running. I will try flexbackup on my Linux servers, though, when I return to the sanity of them. Frankly, I'd still like to try flexbackup, so I'll try the single quotes either Sunday or Monday. thank you! I have just subscribed to this list for two reasons. One is that I have just discovered FlexBackup and the other was to ask for some help with a problem that I have managed to solve myself between subscribing to the list and receiving the welcome message. This is known as Sod's Law! Just in case anyone has a similar experience: I have set $type = 'afio'. I tried a number of backups level 0 and level 1 starting each tape with -newtape. I could not, however, get a TOC listing to work. Each time I received a message - ERROR: No index on tape (or similar). I had previously set $blksize = '0' and $mt_blksize = '0' and this turned out to be the problem. Setting $mt_blksize = '10240' cured the problem. I'm using a DAT drive for backups. A jolly useful and full featured backup utility. I shall continue to play. Barry Samuels http://www.beenthere-donethat.org.uk The Unofficial Guide to Great Britain |

Thanks to both of you for the replies--it turns out you are both correct. I had to move the tape to the proper block, then extract the file w/o the full path (i.e., since the file was a backup of /var, I had to remove /var from the path in restore.txt). After that, it turned out the file to be restored was too large to extract to the tmp dir, so I moved the operation to a partition with more room. It is chugging away as I write this now. Hello, This is not a request for help, or a complaint. I have been using flexbackup for almost two years now (liking it very much!) and thought I would post a note describing how I use it, in the hopes that it might be useful. I have five Linux systems and three MSWindows2000 systems which I backup using flexbackup. Each of the five Linux systems has two hard disks: one is the system/home disk (20Gb), the other is the backup image disk (40Gb). Cron runs a perl script once per day which in turn runs flexbackup. The perl script determines the level of backup (0-9) for the given day of the month. Flexbackup generates a compressed .afio file in an 'images' directory on the backup disk. So far the amount of backup data has been such that I have almost two years worth of backup images on these systems, with still room on the backup disks to spare. On only one system have I needed to go through and start purging the oldest images to free up disk space. (But, I just today installed a 180Gb backup drive in that system, replacing the older 40Gb one.) I have a sixth Linux system which I use as a backup-backup system. It has 500Gb of disk space. Each night cron runs a perl script which copies over the days backup images from each of the five other Linux systems. So then I have two copies of each days backup images, on two separate systems in two different buildings. The three MSWindows systems have their C: drives mounted onto the backup-backup systems filesystem. These drives then are backed up each night along with the backup-backup system. So far this system has worked very well. I don't have to futz with tapes (which I don't have much faith in). All of the backup data is 'on-line' for each system. The only weak point at the moment is that there is only one copy of the backup images for the backup-backup system and the three MSWindows systems. (I may set up one of the five systems as a backup for the backup-backup.) I have been able to restore files several times since I started this system. I have not yet had to do a full-restore (thankfully). Comments welcome. Perl scripts and further details available upon request. Cheers, Scott -- * Scott Coburn * Brookhaven National Laboratory * sc...@bn... 631.344.7110 * This message brought to you by Linux. |

I have inherited a RH 7.3 system using flexbackup 0.9.8 to handle its backups. It has performed flawlessly up to now. However, now I am trying to restore a clobbered file from the tape, and having a tough time of it. Here is what I have tried: flexbackup -extract -files restore.txt where restore.txt is a list of the file I need restored. I ran this as root in the /tmp/ directory. It chugged for quite a while, said "the operation was successful," but no file anywhere. /*************************************** .-"""-. I recently backed up my system using flexbackup with the dump option. After re-installing my machine(freebsd 4.9 release) and installing flexbackup, I tried to do a restore from the tape with the following command(which normally works) root# flexbackup -restore That command gives the following error: buffer not found in $PATH Any suggestions? Hi! First of all - nice program! But I quickly got annoyed that it drops the logfiles (for list/extract/etc.) all over the filesystem (that is always in the current working directory). Therefore I just applied some small changes, so that every log is put into the specified logdirectory. Please excuse my (maybe) dilletantic approach; I never used perl before :-) -- Cu, Robert |

Hi, I've been using flexbackup for a couple of months now, and I seem to have a problem using the pruning system. It works as I expected on the local machine, where I have a set: $set{'homes'} = "/home"; and a prune entry: $prune{'/home'} = "rhesa/mprime"; However, this doesn't seem to work: $set{'ns-intern'} = "10.0.0.50:/home/rhesa"; with $prune{'10.0.0.50/home'} = 'rhesa/mprime'; How should I write that prune entry?
