Have you read and thought about the error message? Do you have the "buffer" program installed? If so, where, and what is the PATH variable set to when flexbackup runs? If not, disable the use of buffer in your config. -- Charlie |

I have just installed version 1.2.1 and it looks like just what I need for my backup purposes. However I am getting an error output when I attempt any commands that communicate with the tape drive. > flexbackup version 1.2.1 (http://flexbackup.sourceforge.net) > /etc/flexbackup.conf syntax OK > > Errors: > buffer not found in $PATH Has anyone else had this error and found a solution? Have I missed something in the config file? Thanks, Jamie Hill |

I am sure I will be corrected on this point if I am wrong. The answer is "it depends" (and may seem obvious): * If you want to restore a single file, you need to restore it from the tape which has the latest version that you want of the file. You appear to be doing incremental backups, so if the file in question had not changed since your last full backup, then the latest version is on the last full backup tape. If the file in question did change since the last full backup you need to find the tape from the incremental done after it changed, and just restore from that tape. If you don't have a clue when the file may have been modified then you may have to do restores from several tapes (perhaps starting with the last full backup tape which likely contains the file). * If you want to restore many files, which may be in several directories with subdirectories, then you need to apply the same logic as above, but with the topmost directory as your starting point rather than a single file. If it was a static directory then a restore from the last full backup should do it. If there were some changes then resore from the last full backup, then start with the tape from the incremental done just after changes were made. If you don't know when changes were made then you may have to do many restores from many backups until you are sure you have restored all of the changes. You do the restores from the tapes in the order they were written in. Hope this help. If not, let us know. Am I asking this question wrong? Do I need to supply more info? Thanks. Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 21:48:17 -0400 (EDT) From: Steven W. Orr <st...@sy...> To: flexbackup help <fle...@li...> Subject: Extraction question. I just installed flexbackup and I'm sorry to say that this what I've been looking for for a very long time. I wish I had know about it earlier. I have an extract question. I now backup N directories to a backup disk every night. I'm using the cron entries that came with flexbackup since they're just perfect for me. So I get one full backup on the first Sunday of the month and then an incremental every night. How do I restore a file or files? Do I restore from the full backup and then restore from the incrementals till I'm done or is there a single command to cycle through them all? I made some changes to the flexbackup perl script that implement the following: - timestamp files for backups from remote hosts are kept on the remote hosts. This solves the problem that ctime could not be considered on remote files. - timestamp files are created at the start of the backup rather than at the end. When timestamp files are created at the end of the backup, files that change or are created while the backup is in progress will not be considered for subsequent backups with higher backup level. I'm running this version on my system and it works fine. Is there a place where I can submit the changes? Karl-Michael |

Hello, I started using flexbackup, nice tool. The changes for version 0.9.9.7 (200301015) talk about considering ctime when selecting files for backup. This currently only works for local backups, not remote backups. Are there any plans to make ctime checking available also for remote backups? This could possibly be done by storing timestamp files for remote backups on the remote machine rather than on the local machine. Another problem with ctime is that even for local backups, the timestamp file is created after the backup has finished. Its mtime is set to the beginning of the backup, but its ctime is obviously set to the time the file is created, i.e. after the backup, so files whose attributes changed during the backup will not be considered in the next backup. Timestamp files should be created at the beginnning of the backup. Karl-Michael |

Flexbackup has displayed the following: Errors: Can't tie DB backup/lib/index Yesterday everything was working - today it isn't. I have had this happen once before (months ago) and I discarded the curre= nt setup and restarted. Can I salvage anything from this rather than restart= ing yet again? Hello, I am trying to use the -d 'var=3Dval' command line option of flexbackup. The option appears to work, but it does not seem to do what I expected it would. Here is the command line: zimtok5# flexbackup -set all -level 7 -d 'idhost=3Dzimtok5' -c /backups/zim= tok5/flexbackup.conf My file /backups/zimtok5/flexbackup.conf has lines in it like this: $idhost =3D "nohost"; $basedir =3D "/backups/$idhost"; $device =3D "$basedir/images"; $logdir =3D "$basedir/log"; $tmpdir =3D "$basedir/tmp"; $stampdir =3D "$basedir/state"; $index =3D "$basedir/log/index"; The "nohost" above is just a placeholder for the real host name, which I would like to pass in on the command line. (So that I can use the same flexbackup.conf file on lots of different hosts.) When I run flexbackup with the above command line this is what I get: flexbackup version 1.2.1 (http://flexbackup.sourceforge.net) /backups/zimtok5/flexbackup.conf syntax OK (override) idhost =3D zimtok5 Errors: =A0$device must be set to a directory, a local device, or a remote device =A0Can't write to /backups/nohost/images =A0$tmpdir /backups/nohost/tmp is not a directory =A0$tmpdir /backups/nohost/tmp is not writable =A0Can't mkdir /backups/nohost/log: No such file or directory =A0Can't write to /backups/nohost/log =A0Can't mkdir /backups/nohost/state: No such file or directory =A0Can't write to /backups/nohost/state: No such file or directory =A0Can't tie DB /backups/nohost/log/index The (override) seems to work, but the value of 'zimtok5' does not get inser= ted into the strings where I need it. The 'nohost' value is still there. So, it seems that flexbackup goes through the whole flexbackup.conf file, does its thing, and then checks to see if there are any command line overri= des. What I was expecting was that it would use any command line overrides while it was doing its thing with the flexbackup.conf file. The later seems like a more intuitive behavior. Is this a correct interpretation of this problem, or am I doing something wrong? I've done further work on this and I'm still getting the same result. So, basic information first. Fedora Core 2, and fully updated. Installed flexbackup-1.2.1-1.noarch. rpm. A few minutes later, after a few minor changes, a differential backup undertaken with the command;- ./flexbackup -set boztu -differential=20 [as su] And this is the result;- |------------------------------------------------------------ | Backup start: Tue Jul 27 09:56:19 2004 | Backup end: Tue Jul 27 09:56:36 2004 |------------------------------------------------------------ |------------------------------------------------------------ | Backup of: /mnt/windowsf/documents Can't do a level 1 backup - no level 0 timestamp found at ./flexbackup line 2288. /home/boztu is backed up, but it fails every time at attempting to do a differential or incremental backup of /mnt/windowsf/documents and with the same error message too. Greetings, I keep getting errors like the following find: /tmp/refdate.26549: No such file or directory find: /tmp/refdate.26549: No such file or directory find: /tmp/refdate.26549: No such file or directory during remote backups (a very similar setup for local backup does not exhibit such errors). I think I've been able to guess where in the code the problem is, specifically inside file_list_cmd(), here: 4918: if (!defined($::debug)) { 4919: open(LIST,"$find |") || die; 4920: open(NEWLIST,"$write") || die; 4921: while(<LIST>) { find: /tmp/refdate.29993: No such file or directory 4958: close(LIST); 4959: close(NEWLIST); 4962: &line(); and the problem should be with find being passed a -newer option specifying a reference file which is not yet there or has already been deleted. Please note I am using -pkgdelta rpm, in case it matters. If necessary, I have the full trace of the run above (105 K compressed, expands to 13,8 MB of text). Thank you in advance Davide Bolcioni -- There is no place like /home. |

I have /dev/tape symlinked to /dev/st0,and both in the tape group; ls -la /dev/tape lrwxrwxrwx 1 root tape 8 Jun 25 14:42 /dev/tape -> /dev/st0 ls -la /dev/st0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root tape 9, 0 Mar 23 13:48 /dev/st0 i've tried 4 different tapes in the machine to try and get things working. Either running as "user" or "sudo; mt -f /dev/tape setblk 32768 -> works fine mt -f /dev/tape rewind -> works fine mt -f /dev/tape erase -> works fine find /home/rodney/ -print | afio -o -z -v -b 32k - | dd ibs=32k obs=32k of=/dev/tape it'll work, and fill up the tape, as advertised. Yet when I run "flexbackup -test-tape-drive" it'll start rewinding, etc, and it'll start writing to the tape, and then 5 - 10 minutes into it, I get these errors in /var/log/messages; Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: hdc: tray open Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0 Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: hdc: tray open Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 4 Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: hdc: tray open Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 8 Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: hdc: tray open Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 12 Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: hdc: tray open Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 16 Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: hdc: tray open Jun 29 09:57:03 riverside kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 20 which is my cdrom, and it shouldn't be backing anything up from that device. this will "fill" up a good portion of the log file. The shell will come back, but the tape looks like it continues to the end of the tape, and then after 30 or 40 minutes, it will be reset. Any suggestions? Thanks -- Rodney D. Hi to all! I'm new on the list. First of all, congratulations for flexbackup. Its an excellent program. The code is easy to understand and the documentation is really good. I have a problem with the hardware compression. When I set compress to hardware ($compress = 'hardware';) and change the variable of compression in mt ($mt{'compression'} = 'datcompression';) I obtain the error: mt: invalid tape operation `compression' I think I understand the code and the compression variable cannot be overrided, and the command is always mt compression 1. ... if ($operation =~ m/generic-blocksize/) { if ($::uname =~ /Linux/) { push(@operations,'compression 1'); } elsif ($::uname =~ /FreeBSD/) ... Am I right ? Are you going to change the code to allow override this ? Im going to try changing "compression 1" for "datcompression on" that is the appropriate command in my mt program. Long life to Free Software !!! Congratulations again. |

Hi all! I want to extract some files from a afio-bzip2 file (from disk). Why afio needs to read the whole file to get my files? I think that it would be more correct to have an index with all the files and jump in the file... don't u think so? Thanks for the help, --Hugo |

Hi I have a question. I am backing up several Linux servers to a central server with lots of disk space and a LTO tape drive. This is run at night using cron. During the day I backup the backups onto tape. I would like to know if I can add the server name to the name of the tar.gz file? This helps when looking at the contents of a tape that has many files with the name /home or /etc. =20 Also can I get flexbackup to overwrite the files in the destination directory so there is only one weeks backup on disk. Being a complete newby at flexbackup, I need some help. The system is Linux 2.4.25 with flexbackup 1.2.1a trying to backup to an HP T4000s SCSI tape drive. I am getting: cat: write error: Input/output error afio: "-" [offset 200k+0]: Fatal error: afio: "-": Broken pipe I tried changing afio to dump and get: cat: write error: Input/output error DUMP: Broken pipe DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted. ERROR from backup, exiting offending command(s): dump -0 -a -f - /home | gzip -4 | cat > "/dev/nst0" In trying to troubleshoot this, the first thing I noticed was that the tapedrive doesn't seem to want to change blocksize: # mt -f /dev/nst0 status SCSI 2 tape drive: File number=0, block number=0, partition=0. Tape block size 512 bytes. Density code 0x45 (QIC-3095-MC (TR- 4)). Soft error count since last status=0 General status bits on (41010000): BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN I then tried: #find /home -print | afio -o -z -v -b 32k - | dd ibs=32k obs=32k of=/dev/nst0 and get: dd: writing to `/dev/nst0': Input/output error 6+0 records in 5+0 records out afio: "-" [offset 224k+0]: Fatal error: afio: "-": Broken pipe Any help will be greatly appreciated. --Richard |
