Basically there is no -fPIC on MiNTOS, which is why the hard-coded -fPIC in Makefile.am is bad.
On Linux -fPIC is added automatically by libtool anyway.

The attached patch has been tested in Gentoo Prefix since 2008.

    I think rather than deleting the libfl_pic.a target, it'd be better to call libtool, which the flex build setup does not currently do.

    Can you submit a patch to do that?

    Thanks for the patch. It's in the flex codebase and will be included in the next release of flex.
