file (at least on all the systems I've seen) doesn't
recognize FLAC files. It'd be nice if flac had a magic
number registered with file. Unfortunately, I don't
know if there is a master central magic number
registry, though
http://ats.nist.gov/cgi-bin/nics/domain_list_with_attributes.cgi?DomainNameList=Magic+numbers
might count as such.

Right now, MP3 shows up as:

$ file ww1.mp3
ww1.mp3: MP3, 128 kBits, 44.1 kHz, Stereo

It'd be neat if something similar happened for flac.

Not sure this belongs in bugs... you might try petitioning
    the major linux/bsd distros.

The linux/bsd distros may need to be petitioned, but they
would need the technical information on how to detect the
filetype (and any attributes that can be detected). So for
file to detect useful data, at the least flac would have to
have a list of what magic number additions must be made.

    Moving this to feature requests.

I just tried this, and with file-4.06 it does recognize flac
    files:

    sherylcrow2003-08-05d1t02.flac: FLAC audio stream data

I believe this can be marked closed.
