I would like to be able to remove FireStarter from the
notification area of KDE 3.1. When the notification
area is active (always, although not requested by me),
a DNS lookup occurs for every 'hit'.

is DNS lookup enabled in the settings? if so just disable that.

You can remove the tray icon, just disable "System Tray operation mode"
in the profile
