When I stream music from the firefly server (on a ReadyNas NV+) to an itunes client everything sounds beautiful. This only works on the local LAN. tunes will not mount the remote library over the internet. OK. I found Firefly Client.

Firefly Client installed fine on my macbook pro, and connects to the Firefly Server both on the local LAN and over the internet (yes, I opened up port 3689). Unfortunately, the sound is terrible with Firefly Client. On the LAN, the music is understandable, but there is a heavy choppy, clicking sound that makes the music pretty awful. Over the internet, all I can hear is the choppy clicking. The music is indecipherable.

    Help (please). Any ideas?

      Hi,

First, thank you for the app, it rules. I've been using it for a while and love it.

When I got a new imac I had the same problem as these people, even though it was configured almost identical to my older one. Clicking buzzing noise in the right speaker. After hours of research I believe I've isolated the problem to Java.

To solve the issue, in Finder go to Applications>Utilities>Java>Java Preferences. In the "General" section on the lower half I moved to the top the preferred version of Java Application to J2SE 1.4.2, ahead of J2SE 5.0 which was the default. This solved the problem. I can recreate the problem if I switch it back. I'm not sure why this fixed it but thought it might help folks in the future.

      Thanks again, best to all.

      B

      Hi alnpix,

Though I'm the developer of Firefly Client I cannot answer to anything! What I can say is that this kind of problem has never been reported. I can advice you to post your problem in the firefly client dedicated thread on firefly media server forum : http://forums.fireflymediaserver.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7198&start=100000
Indeed, this forum is really more consultated than this one and by a larger community.
Anyway, it might come from your files themselves ? Can you send me one or two of your files so I can test with my configuration ? You can send them to me at : vcariven (@ ] users.sourceforge.net

I never ever had this experience with firefly client (or server).

If you can't get it sorted at all, please post your email address and I can give you a temporary access to my firefly server (which is also running on a ReadyNAS) and you can try your client with that one.

1st: thank you to kongo09 for your offer of assistance.

2: I have now tested with MP3 files, and the behavior is unchanged.

3: upon closer observation I noticed that the noise comes from the right speaker only.

4: I then tested with plug-in earbuds...same behavior in right channel only.

5: googled it (macbook pro speaker buzz) and found several recent hits including a "you tube" video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDjmYiUdybI) that accurately demonstrates the same behavior I am experiencing, as well as this posting on an apple help forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8480717) that is right on point.

6: I called Apple support, worked with a very friendly (and apparently competent) techie who wolked me through a variety of diagnostic tests, and concluded that this was most likely an issue with the application, not the hardware.

      Hardware is:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 4 GB
      Bus Speed: 800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B00
      SMC Version: 1.27f1

This is all I know so far. Any new ideas?

This can not be an issue of the FF Client, it must be something else.
I have a very large library that i'm connected to almost every day over the net and lan and i have never had such problems.

I have the exact same problem on a Powerbook G4. It worked fine for months but then it started doing that noise. As the OP, the music is played fine in iTunes and the other apps that produce sounds have no problem either.

I remember that the problem somehow started after updating Leopard to the last version but it's been some times ago, so I don't remember exactly which update it was.

The interesting thing is the same Java Client works perfectly on my MacBook Alu and my XP PC, with the exact same library.
