Yup, SF are having some transient problems with the users database.  Any 
page that accesses it (including our home page) will display this error 
when the database is down.  However, it doesn't mean the site is down.  If 
you can see the menus, you can access the rest of the site.  Whether you 
see the error again depends on whether you go to a page that also uses the 
database...

We haven't decided on a workaround for this problem yet, as we don't 
actually know at this point whether it's a permanent "feature" of the 
backend (DB2?  MySQL?) or a temporary glitch due to SF's recent 
installation of new servers.
