Actually, the Firebird client (since v1.0) is clever enough to default to 
port 3050 if the gds_db entry is not found in "services". So Firebird 
installs never write to the services file.

For InterBase I think the line is required. Either way, it is up to the 
client install routine to do the modification, not the ODBC driver 
installer.
