I don't know what you're talking about.  You should be able to download

ftp://firebird.sourceforge.net/pub/firebird/firebird-freebsd-1.0.tgz

and pkg_install it on a FreeBSD 4.x installation and it should work.

The result of it for everyone else that I've heard from is that it results
in a working installation that works with PHP, etc.  If anyone else is
having the same problem you are, I'm not aware of it.
