You do not need to look into design yet. First do your homework  
beginning with
IF you want more support / interest from the community.
If so, change your attitude accordingly.

Primary target, community or enterprise, or both? That affects the rest.
Stop behaving like goats looking for a horse. You're mainaining one of  
the
finest open source databases in the world. If you're sick of it, quit,  
noone
is forcing you.
