I think so, but I guess not at this stage?

There are other things the client library reads from firebird.conf, as
Dmitry has pointed out. If I had a vote, I'd cast it for using
firebird.conf in 1.5 (with the fix Dmitry has done) and research new
paths for 1.6+.
