This isn't a problem yet as I have no intention of moving to 2.5 for several
months let alone version 3

I'm the maintainer of Firebird rpm for Fedora, Centos, RHEL
so these rpm in EPEL repository as just as it "author-generated rpms"

unless, you can use tar.gz without problem
