I have published an PDF and HTML version of the Firebird 2.5 Language Reference built from asciidoc. I have used some elements of style from the old documentation, but a lot of it is based on the standard asciidoc styles. Examples of things that I know are weird: - A lot of code blocks are rendered in italic and have a big double quote in front due to usage of blockquote - Some tables are broken (wrong number of columns), the conversion tool doesn't handle multiple header rows with multiple spans, this needs to be fixed manually, and I only want to do that once on final conversion of a document - Reserved words list is rendered incorrectly I'm primarily interested in feedback on the overall style, but feel free to point out oddities. That is, if you want to unsubscribe, go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/firebird/lists/firebird-docs/unsubscribe I have tried to remove the address gui...@li... from this mailing list. If you still get emails, then it might be subscribed through a forwarding address (eg a sourceforge account). Given changes in sourceforge, it is impossible to know for us who is subscribed to the list or with what address. Check the headers of the received emails to see what email address was used. I updated the Firebird 3 release notes. While going over the documents, I noticed some PDF rendering issues with callouts (note, caution, etc). If a callout contains a list, and its spacing is not "compact", then the callout block is rendered too small and the the text overflows out of the block. The workaround is to set spacing="compact" for the list. As far as I can tell this seems to be a result of the docbook-xsl update I did earlier. Mark -- Mark Rotteveel |

I have just committed a bulk change fixing a number of XML issues. I strongly recommend that you update from master as soon as possible to avoid potential merge conflicts. I haven't touched the release notes for now, because I wonder about two things: 1. How useful would it be to migrate old release notes (Firebird 2.5 and earlier)? Without migration, fixing any XML issues in those documents doesn't seem to be a good investment of my time. 2. The release notes apply different naming conventions for the files (*.docbook vs *.xml). Renaming these to the normal convention (and switching over to using XInclude instead of entities), might cause merge conflicts. Blockquotes in asciidoc are - just like in docbook - for quotes, and the default styles will make clear it is a quote (but this can of course be tweaked). Yes, my intention is to only remove the prefix spaces, not the significant indentation of code. In any case, I'll probably leave fixing these kinds of issues to just before the final conversion of a document, to avoid having to tweak docbook styling as well just to preserve the current behavior. As for the first category, you can achieve this by styling if you want

Is a blockquote (or its asciidoc equivalent) rendered with quote
characters around it by default? That's unwanted in most, if not all
cases where we used <blockquote>s. No objections from my side if you
change this to whatever you deem best, as long as in-block line
indentations are preserved (except where they make no sense at all,
but in those cases you should probably consult the author).

Correct. This was a skeleton set up by Dmitry in 2011, which Thomas Woinke, Dmitry and myself were going to work on. While trying out things for conversion to asciidoc, I found several issues with our current XML which makes some of it invalid docbook (does not conform to the schema docbook 4.5 schema). With some testing, I found out that fixing these issue, makes the quality of the conversion to asciidoc better (requiring less manual fixes). However, making these changes will touch a lot of the XML sources. I will send a message when I have merged those changes. When this is done, please make sure to update the sources from master because the resulting merge conflicts would be painful to resolve (as in: a lot of work). I won't touch the Firebird 4 release notes for now to avoid possible merge conflicts there. If there are other documents that are better left alone for now because there is work-in-progress, let me know. Mark -- Mark Rotteveel |
