Well, there is no more single core CPU at least not in the performance
segment of the market.
All high speed CPU's are with 2 or more cores.
At the moment I think Intel has advantage over AMD on single thread
performance. This is for 2 reasons. Intel has better internal
architecture(Nehalem). Intel has Turbo Boost which is a way to increase
the performance of single core(Increases clock rate of one of the CPU
cores) while the others are sitting and doing almost nothing.
So for you the best solution will be to use the CPU that achieves the
highest clock rate when one core is used.
AMD also has similar technology in their latest CPU (Phenom X6). But
again the architecture of Intel Nehalem CPU's is much better then
current AMD architecture.
To be honest if I'm buying system for me I'll prefer AMD because I'm AMD
fan. Also AMD is not very expensive like Intel is.
But when I have to buy this system to do real job I'll prefer Intel system.
Check what Intel has to offer. Also you always need at least 2 cores.
One to the the job and the other to cover the rest of the processes.
I'm not sure does Intel supports this but AMD CPU can increase the clock
for more the one core.
I hope this info will help you in your decision.
