When trying to download package freetype219-2.3.8-1, fink fails to download the file freetype-2.3.8.tar.bz2 from any of the mirrors.

After looking at the webpage of freetype's developers (download.savannag.gnu.org/releases/freetype) I saw that version 2.3.8. was buggy and is no longer offered for download. Could this be fixed in the freetype package?

I've sent an e-mail to the fink-devel mailing list with a copy of this report.

It's unfortunate there's no actual contact information about the user that originally reported this.

Fink has its own mirroring service which, amongst other things, provides source files when they're removed by upstream. If you run fink configure and choose one of our master mirrors Fink will be able to download the source tarball.

With regard to upgrading FreeType, let me quote Daniel's reply on the fink-devel mailing list:

    -----
To quote our freetype219-2.3.8-2 package internal notes:

    # 2.3.9 breaks ABI!!!!! (and doesn't bump c_v for new public functions)

That means upgrading will break an unknown (but possibly up to
*every*) existing package that uses it. 2.3.{10,11} perpetuate the
same breakage...freetype devels are well-known around fink to not give
a damn about interface stability or how much damage they do by
breaking it in nearly every minor release. So we might be able to shim
the new version to match (or at least not break upgrade from) old
version, but it will take time.

Do you have specific information about what's buggy in 2.3.8 (maybe we
could import some limited patches from their newer versions)?

Freetype is now at 2.4.4, and the ABI issues around 2.3.9 don't apply anymore.
