Installed on my 12" iBook (1.2Ghz) after uninstalling iScroll2 but found that it does not work or works only briefly and intermittently.

Can you explain which parts are / are not working? I assume the kext loaded since you comment that it works briefly.
Have you calibrated the pad? Without further information it's almost impossible for me to find out if something is wrong.
