This is an old thread, but I just wanted to comment.

I do agree that it is probably not a good practice to embed markup into descriptive metadata, in part because of the basis of preservation. Additionally, a publisher (user) should not be required to embed markup, for the purpose of formatting; instead formatting should probably be limited to carriage-returns/line-feeds and spaces, but none of these effects should require manual markup.

While it might be nice for some users (even for me) to be able to utilize some sort of popup form to fill in and pass values for a description element “template”, in cases where many records have similarly worded and formatted descriptions with these values being record-specific, that task might best be performed with the use of some third-party, external utility which would save “form-filled” descriptions as formatted UTF-8 (Unicode) text (with the ‘space’ and ‘cr’, and ‘lf’ as the only non-visible characters.  Multiple horizontal and vertical spaces could be preserved as Unicode (the user would use only the space-bar and ‘enter’ key).  This then could be copied and pasted into the Fez description field.

Or the user could simply create the description in Fez manually with formatted as paragraphs and indentures only by employing multiple spaces and line feeds, as desired, so long as this alone can be preserved as entered.

I believe that most users would settle for this latter type of behavior (devoid of need for ‘<pre>’, ‘<p>’, ‘<br>’ ‘&nbsp;’, etc.).  The method of separating this concern from the user is entirely another story, though.

Hi Christiaan, and David

Are you sure this is a good idea? Formatting in metadata? This will create all sorts of issues with encodings - how do you know whether a '<' is markup or part of the description? What markup to support? What does this mean for preservation? What will users do with the new feature? Will they embed Javascript code? How many other fields will people want formatting for?

I don't know the answers but it is necessary to ask the questions.

Hi David

No there is no formatting for the description field. But its a good idea
so I'll add it to the wiki Feature Request page:

field?

For example, to get

Test case
---------
This is a test

To appear as written, instead of  "Test case---------This is a test"

I've tried the obvious (like <p>, <br>, \n) with no luck.

Any hints appreciated.

Thanks,
David Johnson.
