Another possibility I've considered is that Yahoo might be having 
technical problems or might be blocking my access after downloading too 
much. I tried downloading the whole 1570 messages again and had perfect 
success up to message 940:

Found a Yahoo failure page, trying again.
Found a Yahoo failure page, trying again.
Found a Yahoo failure page, trying again.
Found a Yahoo failure page, trying again.
HTTP/1.1 999 Unable to process request at this time -- error 999

Browsing to my mail gives a "temporary error" page. Although it doesn't 
explicitly say so, I think it was caused by downloading too much at one 
time.
