I've just gone through the same thing. It turns out that OAuth2 is not necessary. Log on to your google mail user and set up 2 factor authentication. Go to "Manage account'. Select "Security" and enable 2 factor authentication. One that is done go back to security to "App passwords." Follow that process and get a key. Use that key as the password in your fetchmailrc and you will be good to go.
