Operator malfunction.  I did not comment out smpthost, which seemed to be the issue.  

I realized this when thinking I would try to "escape" the dot in the user name or try a user without a dot.

One good thing about winter, my coat is always nearby . . .

There are still some issues, such as the secure connection failing as the string does not match, but 
we shall see.
