Ian,

can you get the logs of a run similar to:

fetchmail --nosyslog --nodetach -vvv -d600

That should show something.  Note that if running as root it will grab
/usr/local/etc/fetchmailrc, all other users will look at
$HOME/.fetchmailrc.  We should then see where it hangs.
