Okay, I've read and reread the manual page and I think I have the
answer; namely that

poll pop.example.com with proto POP3
user "general at example.com" there with
password "my_password" to davec=dave johnj=john shirleyw=shirley
barryw=barry here
~~~~~~~~~~~~ snip ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
should work.

(I presume that leaving barry's email on the ISP's server is not an option?)

Can I ask you why you don't consider multidrop a good idea? What are the
risks?
