So your DB user/pass is root/something? When you load the login page, before you enter a login, does it show a version below the login box? If not, it's a DB connection problem. Possibly MySQL permissions.

I also have this problem. The admin/admin doesn't work but as I'm using this in a test environment it's connecting with the 'root' user. Any ideas?

Given a correct database setup, admin/admin should work. Does your db user have the correct permissions?
