Hello! FBpanel is one really neat panel, and there were nice improvements (languages, notably) in the SVN version, since the v6.1 archive was released. So I wanted to ask if it would be possible to release officially a new source archive. (e.g. 6.1.1) It looks like almost "nothing", however it is the trigger that will make all GNU/Linux distros include the new features of FBpanel in their repositories. Thank you for FBpanel! |

hi, How can i change the height of the region that causes the tasbar to unhide? Currently, the hotspot is higher than the taskbar, thus reducing usable screen space, instead of increasing it. I'd like to make the hotspot for unhiding the taskbar just a thin strip along the bottom of the screen. thanks! |

Hello. I want to enhance the fbpanel cpu plugin by optionally showing each cpu (core) usage individually. The cpu plugin would have one chart component to display the total cpu usage, and n (where n is the number of cpus) meter components, that would display individual cpu usage. The user would be able to set (in the configuration file) which ones he wants: only the total cpu usage, only all individual cpu usages, or both. In order to implement it, I want the cpu plugin to have a horizontal box where the chart and/or meter components would be added. The problem is that currently chart and meter are plugins themselves. So I do not know how to add them as components in a box. Is it possible? Maybe chart and meter should be normal Gtk+ widgets, and then they could be used as components of other Gtk+ container widgets. Any comments? Romildo |

Hello, Not very used to asking advice through a mailing list, I hope I do well. The OS is puppy linux, which uses openbox and fbpanel. fbpanel is configured to hide the tray as to give max space to the application. When the cursor is about two times the height of the tray, the tray already undides. This is annoying as sometimes selections on the bottoom of the application have to be made. Concrete example, when using SeaMonkey it is there to activate the mail component. The website of fbpanel doesn't show an option that can be set to have the tray unhide only when the bottom of the screen is touched. (as is done in JWM) Is this possible? If yes what is the setting to make then? Thank you in advance, Bernard -- ___________________________________________________ B. Hello! I see that fbpanel 'mem' plugin uses the following formula to find out the amount of used memory: used = MemTotal -(MemFree + Buffers + Cached + Slab); But this formula is giving me a different value than "free" command. I think the reason is that free does not account for "Slab" in its "-/+ buffers/cache" line. Thus, I have this question: Is it correct to ignore "Slab" amount when accounting for the free space? -- Denilson Figueiredo de Sá Rio de Janeiro - Brasil |

Anatoly, Thanks for sorting out compiling of Fbpanel 6.0 in Puppy Linux. My latest build, codenamed "Quirky 018" has Fbpanel and Openbox, announced here: http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01483 If you want to try it, the live-CD is only 102MB. It is also easy to compile source while running from the live-CD, without having to do an installation of Puppy. The thing I want to ask about is the menu. My experience is, and the testers are reporting the same thing, considerable difficulty with using the menu. When we click on the menu button, the menu pops up, but then it disappears too easily. The behaviour is inconsistent. Sometimes, I click on the menu button, then move the mouse pointer upward an inch or two into the top-level menu -- but the menu then immediately disappears. Most of the time it stays, but it will disappear unexpectedly as I move the pointer around within the menu. There also seems to be a timeout, of about 15 seconds. This is different from the above problem (where the menu can disappear much sooner). The timeout is a problem as the user might need much more time to decide on what to choose. What we really want is no timeout, the menu should stay there as long as the mouse pointer is within the menu. Is there an easy way we could hack the code to fix this? Or, could you please fix it? I'm trying to add a new plugin with just a single text entry. The text entry shows up, but for the life of me, I can't get any signals from there. Can anyone spot the problem? My callbacks don't do much right now because I've been so frustrated just trying to figure out why they're not getting called. I sit with a problem, nobody knows an answer and I already googled me stupid. I am working on the configuration of fluxflux - a German PClinxOS remaster with Open box and fbpanel http://fluxflux.net/ in fbpanel <profile> config file there is under Plugin "systemmenu" Plugin { type = menu config { image = /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/actions/go-up.svg systemmenu { } which file determines, which applications are shown by systemmenu from the folder /usr/share/applications ? e.g: No single filemanager appears in the distributed menu, although I have installed 4 of them (all shown in /usr/share/application) I think it is missing at least one category, because if I change in emelfm.desktop Categories=GTK;FileManager;X-MandrivaLinux-System-FileTools; with Categories=System;Settings;X-MandrivaLinux-System-Configuration-Hardware; emelfm is shown in system and the whole system is in German, we also would like to have the Categorie names in German (shown only in English: Audio & video, graphics, Network, Office, Settings, System, Utility) screenshot: www.kult-ex.org/fotos/menue-fbpanel.jpg best regards Thomas Hinterberger |

An update on the "always on top". Using fbpanel with openbox is working better than I could have hoped. * Maximizing a window does not put the window overtop of fbpanel * windows 'snap' to fbpanel (move/resize) I made some notes a long time ago about a manual hide feature. I don't really care enough to pursue it, or an autohide feature though. =) |

I'd like to bring this back up. David, is this possible? Is this a feature you'd be interested in implementing? I love this plugin so much that I've been using it since it was first given. It's been the only way for me to have a simple date+time. I'm going to ask for it to be packaged in with fbpanel for my distribution, but I'd still to have this included by default with fbpanel. I have some notes on genmon, and a copy of it, here: http://jrandomhacker.info/Fbpanel_genmon |

It would also be possible to learn the dimensions of the desktop and automatically move aside fbpanel in an intelligent manner which is correct for every desktop. So there would be one snippet of code to put into the fbpanel rc file, and one script which would work universally for all computers to hide or unhide fbpanel. But i like seeing my fbpanel always there, so I'm not too interested in making this right now. It would be an interesting afternoon project though.. =) |

I would have made some way to make your script learn the position of fbpanel and act accordingly. If it was in the default position, then move it. If it was already moved, then restore it. There are a few ways to do it. I have some notes around here somewhere: http://jrandomhacker.info/X Probably the best way is to just have your script write a file or a variable when it activates. It checks for that file or variable and does the right thing. So it would end up working like a toggle, and not act as separate on/off scripts. > All this works pretty well, but there is a complication that should be > mentioned: On startup, fbpanel assigns the title "panel" to its window. Here is your solution. =) wmctrl -F -r "panel" (other switches) quote: [-F] Modifies the behavior of the window title matching algorithm. It will match only the full window title instead of a substring, when this option is used. Furthermore it makes the matching case sensitive. |

Thanks very much for the auto-hide feature! It occurred to me that sometimes it is also helpful to have panel hiding triggered by a mouse click. (The panel in KDE allows either autohiding or clicking on the sides of the panel to trigger hiding, for example.) I don't want to seem ungrateful for the work that went into fbpanel's autohide! So rather than just asking for hide-on-click to be added to fbpanel, I thought it would be proper to offer a workaround that can be used in the meantime to accomplish the same goal. Here's a simple way to accomplish this with fbpanel: This is based on wmctrl, "a UNIX/Linux command line tool to interact with an EWMH/NetWM compatible X Window Manager." (http://www.sweb.cz/tripie/utils/wmctrl/) wmctrl can resize a window from the command line or from within a script. On my system, for example, the following command slides fbpanel almost completely off the screen to the left, leaving only a small region visible on the left of the screen: "wmctrl -r panel -e 0,-1,-1,26,-1". (The "-r panel" identifies the fbpanel window by the title assigned to it by the window manager, while the "-e 0,-1,-1,26-1" indicates the new dimensions when the window is mostly hidden.) Similarly, the following command slides the fbpanel window back across the screen, making it fully visible: "wmctrl -r panel -e 0,-1,-1,1305,26". I place each of these commands in their own files, labeled fbpanel_hide and fbpanel_show respectively. Of course these exact dimension may not work for you, depending on screen resolution, etc. You will have to experiment with the "wmctrl -e" parameters to find what works. ("man wmctrl" is helpful.) The next step is to add two launchbar plugins to the ~/.fbpanel/default file. I place one launchbar plugin early in my default config file, so that the image associated with this plugin will appear on the leftmost portion of my panel. (So in my case I place my launchbar before the menu plugin.) Here's what it looks like Plugin { type = launchbar config { button { image = ~/image_files/left_arrow.png tooltip = hide action = ~/fbpanel_hide } } } The second launchbar plugin needs to be near the end of the file, so that the image associated with it will be placed on the rightmost part of the panel: Plugin { type = launchbar config { button { image = ~/image-files/right_arrow.png tooltip = show action = ~/fbpanel_show } } } When you click on the left arrow ("hide"), wmctrl slides the panel all the way to the left, leaving only the right arrow visible. (The right arrow appears in the left corner of the screen.) Click the right arrow ("show") and the panel is restored again. A nice touch is to make sure that when you restore the panel, the right arrow moves all the way off the right edge of the screen. This ensures that the "show" button will only appear when the panel is hidden. All this works pretty well, but there is a complication that should be mentioned: On startup, fbpanel assigns the title "panel" to its window. When wmctrl resizes a window it does so by looking for the first window with a title that includes the string "panel." If some window other than fbpanel's has a title that includes "panel" then it may get resized when you press the hide or show buttons. I found this out when I was editing my ~/fbpanel/default file. I pressed the "hide" arrow on my panel and my xterm window disappeared! Why? Because I had the name of my current directory included in the window title for each of my xterms. Since my xterm window title - "~/fbpanel" - includes the string "panel" it got resized instead of fbpanel's window. There are a couple ways to deal with this problem. 1) wmctrl lets you change the name of a window to something unique that is unlikely to be included in any other window title. E.g., "wmctrl -r panel -T use_a_unique_string_here" will allow you to direct the wmctrl window resize commands to a window called "use_a_unique_string_here." If you change "panel" to something unique right after fbpanel starts, then you can ensure that your window show and window hide commands always go to this unique window. 2) A simpler and more direct approach is to modify the two lines in fbpanel's panel.c code that sets the window title to "panel." line 389: gtk_window_set_wmclass(GTK_WINDOW(p->topgwin), "panel", "fbpanel"); line 390: gtk_window_set_title(GTK_WINDOW(p->topgwin), "panel"); Replace "panel" with your unique string, recompile fbpanel, and then you can direct your wmctrl resize commands to this unique window title without having to use wmctrl to rename the window. |
