Overview

This tutorial will give you step by step instructions on how to set up and use the client software. This program is what will be running on the buzzer laptops, and will act as the buzzer for each.

Launching the Client Software

  1. Download the "FacultyFeud.zip" file from the downloads section, or click the download button above
  2. Extract "FacultyFeud.zip"
    • You should not have two folders - "Host" and "Client"
  3. Copy the "Client" folder to each of the laptops you will use as buzzers (2 max)
  4. On each laptop:
  5. The client program should now be open, and you should see a completely white screen with a few options on the top

Setting Up the Network

The Faculty Feud program communicates with the buzzers over a network. This means that the host computer as well as the two buzzers must be on the same network and be able to connect with each other. I will not go into the details of networking here, but will explain enough to get the program working.

Specifics for Penfield High School

  • A computer connected to the guest network will NOT be able to connect with computers on the PCSD network (staff/building laptops, building-owned desktops)
  • Most likely, computers on an advanced network will NOT be able to simply connect, there will need to be more configuration done
  • Computers on the guest network can ONLY connect with other computers on the guest network
  • Computers on the PCSD network can ONLY connect with other computers on the PCSD network

Setting Up the Network

Preparing the Laptops

  1. Here we will assume that you are using 3 Penfield High School-owned laptops
  2. Turn on all three laptops
  3. Select the two that will act as buzzers and the one that will act as the host
  4. For instructions on setting up the host see [Host Software Game Tutorial]
  5. Confirm that all three are connected to the wireless network

Getting the IP of the Host

  1. On the host laptop, click Start > Type "cmd" > Click "cmd.exe"
  2. On the command prompt (black window) that opens:
  3. Type "ipconfig" and press enter
  4. Find the entry called "Wireless LAN Adapter Wireless Network Connection"
  5. Under that entry, write down the value of "IPv4 Address"

Connecting the Clients to the Host

  1. Make sure the "Play Window" is open on the host laptop
  2. Do this on each client (buzzer) laptop:
  3. Type the host's IP (see above section) into the "Host IP" text box
  4. Click the "Connect" button
  5. The "Status" box should turn green
    • If it stays red, check to make sure the network is configured correctly and that you have the correct host IP
  6. Click the "Buzzer" box and choose whether this is the left or right buzzer
    • This should be relative to the audience
  7. Press Ctrl+Alt+Enter to full-screen the client window
  8. Press Ctrl+Alt+L to hide all setup controls
    • Do this to prevent the contestants from accidentally changing the settings

Playing the Game

  1. When the contestants come up, they can press any button on the keyboard to trigger the buzzer
  2. The entire screen will turn green on the first buzzer to be triggered
  3. Once the first buzzer is triggered, the they will not be able to trigger another one until the next question or the host presses the "Reset Clients" button
