Hi!

Recently, I was given a 4L from a friend's company that was getting rid of old stock, a few others got some as well. When we got them we noticed we were having trouble getting the face tracking feature to work whilst others have reported that the eye tracking system was still functional. It was only after the fact that the person we got it from found out that they were development models and no current software would work lest each of us pay about 2-3K to gain access into it.

I know of a friend who did buy a 4C a while back and had to some workarounds to get his to work for IL2 using this application so I was wondering if anyone knows or if its even possible to get the 4L to just simply run the facetracking portion of its systems, me a few others would greatly appreciate it.

Hello Paul,

I'm not sure what the 4L model exactly is. From what year is that? Does it precede the EyeX?

The first Tobii tracker plugin I created was for the EyeX model. It only supported gaze-tracking and we made it work using 3 algorithms. Did you try that?

You may have to remove newer versions of the plugin to make it work.

Making a guess I think it would have come out the same time as the 4C model but I wont be able to confirm that until I'm home. I might test the EyeX plugin as well. Im very much in the dark when it comes to Tobii and its products. I'll have more information hopefully later on today, I'll post what I can find out.

So from what little I've been able to dig around on is that the 4L is the same as the 4C, but its the commerical/dev model, not the cosumer model. Release date is somewhere around 2018-19. I did a little bit a stupid and didn't install the tobii driver, since apparently there isn't one for the 4L, but from what little I've done so far, NoIR did pick up the 4L properly. However, it is only supporting the eye tracking rather than any head movement. I've attached an image of the main screen of what I've been able to pull off as I'm trying to get this to work with games like DCS and Arma 3.

Hello Paul,

Thanks for the feedback. Did you also try the EyeX version of the tracker plugin for FaceTrackNoIR? With that, the gaze-position is used to move the head.

It's not strange that older hardware does not support headtracking: Tobii introduced that later in time (after I suggested it ;)

The headtracker code resides inside the firmware, so it either works, or it does not I'm afraid..

  I attempted to get the EyeX version to work, but sadly I haven't been able to pull it off. I'll have to test it in a few games as I've been trying to smooth out the other working version a little more. There is a beta driver here that I found on the site that apparently keeps head tracking for the 4C, but when I tried installing it, it didn't do anything apart from make the one I have just not function and wiped the previous software I was using.
  
  If its a case that the 4L can't do it then at least I have eye tracking. If I have to I can look around for some form of an alternative as I was using a trackhat clip but that died due to the battery and board failing so this seemed like the cheapest course that I could take.
  
  I appreciate your help in attempting to get this working, but I think unless I can get ahold of an actual 4L drive, this would be limited to just the eyes rather than the whole list of features. Its a bit odd, but its just the way it is

Hello Paul,

If you are looking for the cheapest solution, then I think you already have it: the PS3Eye webcam combined with FaceTrackNoIR.

Is the facetracking option with faceAPI not sufficient for you?

  I havent actually looked into it yet as I was mainly trying to get these 4Ls to work since there's a few of us that got them and another member of the group exhausted all other options through official means to get ahold of the drivers or even getting any help which is a shame because now these, apart from the eye tracking, are useless in thier eyes.
  
  Personally, I'm okay with just having stuff that's not strapped to my head, just got to get used to it is all
